Courgette Loaf + Raw Nuts

I decided that I wanted to make a courgette cake, I have very fond memories of it from a co-worker and desired to re-create it at home.

I found a recipe online, simply typed in healthy courgette cake and it came up with dozens.

k 001

  • Butter for the tin
  • 2 large egg
  • 125ml vegetable oil
  • 85g soft brown sugar
  • 350g courgette, coarsely grated
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 300g plain flour
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 140g sultana

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line a 2lb loaf tin with baking parchment. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, oil and sugar, then add the courgettes and vanilla.

In another bowl, combine the remaining ingredients with a pinch of salt.

Stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, then pour into the tin. Bake for 1 hr, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool, then serve, or freeze for up to 1 month.

It’s gorgeous, I would highly recommend eating it fresh and warm from the oven with a cuppa.

I also made two recipes from my Naturally Sassy book. This is a great book for raw, healthier, cooking and baking. Highly recommend buying it.

Peanut Coco Balls:

Haven’t tried these yet but will update when we do!

I also gave a second whirl at the peanut butter cups. They we’re much prettier and successful the second time as the ingredients didn’t scare me as much!

Guess the photography set up is improving a little too, huh?

My last 9 Instagram posts. I may make 9 a running feature, but we’ll see how it goes. Why not leave me your instagrams in the comment? I always love looking at pretty pictures! You can find me under kirstylovesprettythings.

Clinique Skin Care

I’ve always suffered from dry skin, this has been becoming more of a problem as I’ve gotten older.

It reached a tipping point recently where I was literally slathering myself in moisturizer that seemed to be having no effect. I was downing water like there was no tomorrow and having to pee constantly. So I decided that I’d speak to one of the ladies at the Clinique Counter.

I spoke about my dry skin and how no changes that I made seemed to make a difference and my makeup no longer sat nicely and would peel at random points of the day. She sat me down, pulled out several products and removed all my make up.

She recommended several products that would help and pointed out that I needed to start healing and promoting new skin cells before the moisturising stage as by that point the moisture is just being sucked into all the dead skin and not penetrating the layers it needs to, to make a difference.

Recommendations for my skin:

Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush £79.00

Liquid Facial Soap £16.50

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ £18.00-£30.00

Clarifying Lotion 1

Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator

Pep Start™ Eye Cream

I asked what would make the most difference now as I couldn’t budget for them all at once.

Clarifying Lotion 1 £16.50

To use this you simply pour a small amount on a cotton pad, swipe over the effected areas (I do my whole face) and leave, no washing require as the ingredients only stay active for 30 seconds and are then absorbed by your skin. It helps to promote skin cell renewal.

Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator £34.00

You require a pea size amount and massage it into your face from the T-zone outwards. This is oil free, it helps to hydrate for a full 24 hours, over a long period of time it helps your skin to build up a natural barrier to environmental irritants.

Pep Start™ Eye Cream £22.00

Like caffeine for the eyes. I love using this in the morning as my eyes feel really tight where I’m still tired. It’s a 3 second fix that helps to hydrate and brighten, I love swiping the cold ball applicator under my eye for instant soothing. I’ve also read that others keep it in the fridge!

Sorry for the scary pictures! I’ve noticed a real difference personally after only a month of use and I’m much happier with how my make up sits. I still have some problem areas but its nothing compared to how it was.

I have a feeling that I may go back and invest in the other recommendations but I’m not in a rush at the moment.

Creative Colouring at Home

You may remember from a previous post that I was on a journey to rose gold blonde. I got to this stage:

I adored it, like really loved the colour, how it made me feel, how it looked, people’s reactions. What I didn’t like? The damage it was doing, the sore scalp and the price.

For this kind of colour I was having to go once a month, this was £120 a pop. £720 in the six months that I did it for, may not seem like a lot but that’s £1440 a year. When saving for a house thats money that I could put to better use. So I decided to change my hair.

I had simply been doing a light brown dye for the last 3-4 months and was really unhappy with it. It just looked really boring, lacklustre and multi toned, basically a bad dye job.

So I thought I’d do something a bit more creative! I’m self-employed and work with children, they always enjoy fun changes and so I thought I’d add some pops of colour.

My hair was between the first and second blonde. Excited! I wanted a halo design, which meant I wanted a band of dark, turquoise, pink and dark again.

It is a little fiddly to do yourself but you can. I recommend reading instructions though as I didn’t for the creatives and got into a little pickle trying to wet the hair needed.

My recommendation: take your time and read instructions!

I feel that I’ll have to do the turquoise again due to my mistake, I wet the blonde before hand for the pink. However overall I’m very happy with the result. I got out the old curling tongs and had a whirl with them to see if they showed off the colour a bit more. I’m very happy with the result.

Price tag: £19.98 and the comfort of home.

YSL and Clinique

This is an older purchase, the YSL Tint-in-Oil – Crush Me Orange

As always I just prep my lips with my By Terry Balm while I do the rest of my make up.

I was looking for a coral gloss. Something low maintenance that I could just slick on. This turned out to be a little not to my taste but its something I wear from time to time when I want something bolder.

Its a nice formula, slightly sticky but I find it very moisturising. Not something I’d wear on a windy day though.

I have also recently bought the Clinique Chubby Stick Highlighter

Make Up Reviews 023

I love it, like daily use loving it.

I used it subtly but I found that I needed to put much more on for it to be visible in the photograph. This may be something for you to think about. Its hard to overload on in my opinion and very easy to blend out if you think you have too much on.

MAC – Tan Pigment

I brought the MAC Tan Pigment recently and promised some photos of a make-up look with it.

I started off with a clean face. I have applied the tinted moisturiser and my eyeshadow primer.

Next I used the colour in the top triangle as just a medium neutral base. I find the Burberry eyeshadows simply stunning. I’ve had this one a year, use daily and I still haven’t hit pan, a fantastic investment.

After, I plucked out the gorgeous Tan Pigment from the group and gave a wash of that all over the lid. I used the pigment lid to tap off the excess and really packed it into the brush. I loved this colour and will seriously be investing in more from MAC.

The pigment pots are huge and I could see myself wearing it every day for like two years and not getting through it.

I used my concealer under my eyes, filled in my brows, spotted on my highlighter and lashed on the mascara and I have to say I’m really pleased with the outcome. A very comfortable colour.

I would highly recommend these pigments, they come in a massive amount of shades. They’re long wearing. I’ve had this on all day and it’s not shifted. The colour is full and true and the shimmer isn’t in your face.

Very happy!

Afternoon Tea – At Home!

We recently had an at home Afternoon Tea, provided by Julie of Jules for my sisters 30th.

Jules Afternoon Tea 015

This was done the week that my sister returned from Egypt, she went to the same hotel that MrGuine and I went to on our recommendation that it was as lovely as she thought it would be!

Anyway, Julie comes to your own home and provides you with an afternoon tea service (UK only and I’m not sure of her mile radius, will check!), she does things such as baby showers, birthdays, children’s tea (very popular) etc too.

She brings all the crockery, the cakes, the cake stands, the cutlery, the tea, the milk, tea pots etc. You just need to provide the hot water. It was so much fun, made even nicer by it being in the comfort of our own home. We had 10 adults and four children join us, including Julie herself.

She provided a beautiful delight of cakes, fresh cream and jam scones, finger sandwiches and teas (she doesn’t typically bring coffee so if you have a coffee drinker you may want to mention this).

The truffles have alcohol in them, so be wary of sneaky children with sticky fingers! Don’t think it would cause any harm and the majority of alcohol is burned off when baking but it can be badly received by some.

Jules Afternoon Tea 019

My auntie has recently been diagnosed as diabetic and had to massively limit her intake of sugars, she was going partially blind and had been having problems with her hands and feet. So we spoken to Julie and she made her a number of diabetic safe options and also bought alone cheese scones, cream cheese and a cheese board. This was very well received by several of the guests and thoroughly enjoyed.

We opted for the Champagne upgrade and it was very much enjoyed by the ladies. I had a sip for the toast before passing along my glass to my sister as I don’t like to drink alcohol.

Altogether it was a fantastic day and we were occupied for 2 and a half hours. Everyone appeared to love it and were each very happy.

You can find Jules Afternoon Tea on Facebook.
